Selflessness is not about selfless actions

Do not be what you appear to do, but the one appearing to do it.

Selflessness is not about doing selfless actions. There is no such thing in a world where there seems to be more than one. In such a world you need to appear as if you are someone definitive separated from the whole. In other words, you must appear to have a self, that individually determines what to do and think.

It is pretending to be a self, that makes you selfless.

This does not mean though, that you have to believe, it is you. Just like you do not have to believe, that you are the fighter in a video game. You only have to pretend it. And it is pretending to be a self, that makes you selfless.

You are not the fighter, you pretend to be in a video game, even though you do everything necessary to be a winner. Likewise you are not the self you pretend to be in the world, even though you do whatever is necessary to preserve the self in a world where there seems to be more than one.

So selflessness is not about doing selfless actions, but about not being identified with what it seems to think, feel and do, when pretending to be that specific self.
