You undo the belief in duality by enjoying it, Part 1

Alexius grew up in a war-torn home in the sense that he never knew when his father would hit him again. The constant sense of danger made him conclude, there was something wrong with him. In an attempt to distance himself this hideous feeling, he projected it onto his father. But not acknowledging the unpleasantness in himself, he could not feel his pleasantness. Hence he kept looking for pleasure outside of himself until he recognised the displeasure in himself. And thus also the pleasure because without it there is nothing to define displeasure. Happiness unfolds when you rest in sadness

If you do not acknowledge the negativity in yourself but project it onto others, you disconnect yourself from the positivity you have because it is your negativity that defines it. The same applies if you hide negative thoughts and feelings from your awareness by projecting them onto vulnerable parts of your body. Long story short, when you do not ratify the negativity in yourself, your experience of being positive is fake.

To formulate genuine positivity inside of you, the negativity that you have disassociated yourself from must be reestablished as yours. This you do by acknowledging that when you perceive something to be negative, it is your own negativity because you get what you have. Just like the suns colouration of your skin is determined by the pigmentation you have.

In plain English, the separation from your negativity, you undo by acknowledging that even though negativity seems to come from outside, you experience it because you have it inside. This does not necessarily mean, you have a beggar inside of you when you see someone begging on the street. But if you judge it to be negative, you have negativity inside you.

When feeling sad is perceived as ´it is what it is,´ the counterpart of it, namely gladness, unfolds from inside of sadness. This happens gradually if you have doubts about perceiving it like that, but if not it occurs right away.

Whether the polarity is uncovered immideatly or gradually, it is quickly hereafter replaced by other pairs of duality, for example weakness and wellness, disappointment and contentment or tears and laughter. If you keep going with the pairing of contrasts, you end up feeling so entertained by their interaction, that you cannot ask for more wherefore the need duality is undone.

You do not need to go deep into this negativity to acknowledge it is yours – just like you do not have to dive into the water in a well to ratify it is there. A quick look from above is sufficient. In other words, a glance of the negativity inside of you is enough to know it is there, so you can perceive it as ´it is what it is.´ Since that calls off your categorical view of negativity, its counterpart, positivity, bounce out of it. And since this polarity makes you feel complete, the belief in duality can be undone completely.

In hack #4.3 Being a self or no-self, you can read about how the perception ´it is what it is´removes the conditioned way of reacting to something in a singular way, so you, instead, have the satisfaction of dualism.

Any experience perceived as positive is bound to be complemented with something judged as negative because everything, in a world of duality, comes in pairs. This was the short version. The longer one is that when you begin to bring back negativity into your awareness as your own, the interplay of negativity and positivity may not get your attention right away. Chances are you, instead, feel like going to hell because unwanted emotions keep coming out of the dark. Read more about that here. Perhaps this starts off slowly with a familiar sense of depression that you a long time ago hid from your awareness by combining it with the sensitivity of a vulnerable part of the body.

But since depression often is a rage that has been depressed, it is only a matter of time before it flares out in brutal sensations of hellfire. Maybe that feels as if acid-like splashes come out of the fragile segment of the body you initially imagined fusing with your anger. Or like you are tortured by a ruthless and evil force.

Not escaping but acknowledging that it feels like you are in hell, your response to this can be perceived as ´it is what it is. Since that turns your single-minded interpretation of the reaction, into a dualistic adventure, it is no longer limited to a feeling of being in hell. Its counterpart, heaven, opens up as well. Amazed by this, you realise, in a world of duality, there is no heaven without hell – just like there is no breathing in without breathing out, or day without night, for example. You cannot have one without the other. They are like two sides of the same coin. So if you like Alexius grew up in a war-tome home, you realise there is no war without peace.

In a world of duality, everything is experienced in pairs. If you do not try to split any of them so you can hold onto a singular perspective, you are aligned with duality. This does not mean things work better but that it does not matter. You feel complete because you get the flow of dualism.

In other words, hell does not go away, but you discover it is paired with heaven. This is not a matter of balancing the pleasure of heaven with the displeasure of hell but continuously going up and down between those opposites, like when you have fun going up and down in a roller coaster or play yoyo. Since twofoldness is what duality is all about, and you believe to be in a world of duality, going with the interaction of hell and heaven makes you feel complete.

Eventually, you feel so fulfilled by this and other pairs of duality that you forget what and where you are. Hence there does not appear to be anything hiding non-duality. In the course of this process, you may feel more easygoing if the problematic areas of the body, in which you once attempted to hide your misery, are repaired.

The body is automatically maintained by the brain if you do not interfere with ideas of perfecting the body through yoga and whatnot.

When the body no longer is used as a means to hide unpleasant feelings from your awareness, it does not feel attacked by psychological issues. Thus it relaxes and becomes available for healing. Not by your ideas, though, because it does not want to be integrated with spirituality, or pumped up to appear more powerful, so you can promote yourself as spectacular. Such attempts the body sees as attacks on its physical integrity. Actually, it considers any singular point of view as an attack because its foundation is twofold.

If dualism is not denied, the singular feelings you once projected onto the body start to interact with their counterpart. Thus tensions in the body slowly but surely dissolve.

Fortunately, the brain has the blueprint of that hooked up with the biological system of the body, so it can restore it by its nature,* and, therefore, make the experience of being someone inside pleasurable.

Should the descent into hell** make you feel desperate, and you overlook its counterpart, relaxation, it may be beneficial with a break from duality. This is not done by pacifying yourself via meditation, relaxing music, incense and whatnot, but by not holding back the despair, so the full speed of it can ignite a take-off to the empty breath (read more about that in hack #5.2 Uncontrolled rate leads to a state of not-knowing).

A state of not-knowing does not provide you with the fulfilment of duality but the bliss of nothing.

The empty breath immediately brings you in a state of not-knowing, where, although experiences go on, as usual, there is nobody to respond to them, and thus no reaction that can establish them to make a difference. Hence the idea that there is more than one falls apart. And so does the brain after 20 minutes, 45 at most, in this state, as without the confirmation of differences, it has nothing to process. You should, therefore, not remain in a state of not-knowing too long at a time, if you do not want to permanently undo the belief in duality (read more about that here).

No worries. Not much time is needed in a state of not-knowing to have the slate wiped clean (read more about that here), so you return to the conscious experience of being someone with the perception ´it is what it is.´ Read more about that here. When that is the default perception of your response, you have to an experience, your single-minded interpretation of it opens up and become twofold. Hence you do not only feel to be in hell, for example. You also get its counterpart, heaven. In this interplay of this polarity, as well as any other, you feel complete.

This is not to say that non-duality is a fusion of heaven and hell or the union of all contrasts. Non-duality is not something, nor nothing, because it takes more than one to be anything – also to have a shape. Consequently, non-duality is formless and therefore endless, wherefore it is everything.

´What if…?´ versus ´it is what it is´

The topic of this article, however, is not non-duality but duality. You need to be fully anchored in the belief that you are someone in a world of duality if you want to have it undone – just like you need to play a game if you are going to leave it.

Hence we return to the world of duality in which thoughts and feelings must be dealt with in an abstract way and physical issues in a tangible way. Those ways cannot be combined, so if you assume your anxiety is caused by a physical problem or this is caused by your worries, you better correct your assumption.

This connection only seems to be real because it appears to have an impact when you keep imagining ´what if…?´ But your thought-up outcome vanishes when ´what if…?´ is replaced with ´it is what it is.´ And since there is no cause without an effect, your alleged connection between non-physical and physical issues is no more and never was. In other words, the apparent impact coming from the combination of psychological and physical issues is an illusion. Just like the comments or likes on Facebook have no material effect because cyberspace and materiality do not mix. Or a romantic fantasy about a unique relationship ever is going to manifest physically.

When something has been perceived as ´it is what it is,´ the specific meaning you decided that it has opens up and reveals it is not alone. It is paired with its opposing element. Thus hate, for example, which is in a pair with love, does not make you frown but smile.

You most likely are diagnosed with vertigo, when you tell your doctor the world is spinning around you, even though that is not possible. It is solely something you experience inside of you. In some cases, it is caused by small crystals of calcium that have gotten loose in your inner ear. Vertigo*** is a glaring example of believing in something that is beyond the bounds of possibility. The world is not spinning around you. The whirling sensation is an inner experience caused by a psychological problem, which seems so dangerous that you need to keep it at a distance by imagining it happens outside of you.

That is until you face your impression of the emotional issue so you can perceive it as ´it is what it is.´ Since your singular impression, therefore, expands into a dualistic perspective, there is not a single-minded point of view to uphold the fear of facing your reaction to your suppressed psychological problem. This is not about understanding what you have concealed. That takes you away from feeling it, and then you cannot perceive your response to it as ´it is what it is,´ so it becomes dualistic.

This sometimes feels like your singular point of view is a bubble inside of you, for example of sadness, that turns inside out and becomes a bubble of gladness. Since that makes you feel complete, you may not notice the need to hide psychological problems is gone. Especially, because this polarity, like any other, is momentary and quickly replaced by others just as fulfilling.

It is not possible to feel something at all because it takes more than one to do so, and there is no more than that which is one. But since you are reading this, you believe it is possible to be and have more than one. Thus you must feel what you believe in being to undo that belief.

The same procedure works if you have attempted to hide specific thoughts and feelings from your awareness by stashing them behind a stifled breath, a peaceful appearance, a pumped-up show of self-confidence, ongoing complaints combined with a quest for something better, for example$. Should the procedure seems complicated, and you forget what to perceive as ´it is what it is,´ you perceive your uncertainty like that. Thus you get certainty as well. And not only that. You get the interplay of polarity, which is what duality is all about. Thus you feel fulfilled.****

Always perceiving your response to something as ´it s what it is,´ you do not have to control your reaction to avoid feeling wrong because it will be supplemented with feeling right. This does not mean right and wrong are balanced. Dualism is not about balance because that cancels out contrasts (read more about that here) and without it, a world of duality cannot be experienced – just like you cannot get the pleasure of a rocking chair if it is not moving. Photo © Alexius Jorgensen.

In the context of vertigo, the cause of it may not be psychological but physical. In that case, it should, of course, be approached materially. Maybe with the help of a healthcare professional, particular vitamins, or the Epley exercise. If, however, your reason for doing this is to get it over and done with, you will be fixated on a return to something you consider as normal.

Consequently, you are not going to feel fine regardless of the outcome, like you do when your response to the problem is perceived as ´it is what it is.´ That perception does not only expand the interpretation of your reaction but also change how you experience the cure as well as the outcome. In this case, maybe via the interaction of instability and stability, doubt and confidence, fatigue and health, disappointment and contentment or perhaps another pair of duality. This you must see for yourself because part 1 of this article is about to end.

If this is experienced as abrupt, and you react with astonishment, please perceive that as ´it is what it is.´ Then it is no longer excluded from its counterpart, calmness, wherefore duality is in play. Advancing from this pair of duality to others – for example abrupt and gradual, beginning and end, or expectation and surprise – you, eventually, are so blown out by the interaction of duality that nobody is walking a path with no distance to that which is everywhere since it is formless and therefore endless, namely non-duality.

*) This transition happens over time and mostly at night, as the brain is not interrupted about your ideas of wellness when you are asleep. If you in this period feel like sleeping more, by all means, do it. The brain probably needs more time to restore the body.

***) In the article, Psycho-Physiological Dizziness Syndrome, the approach to dealing with vertigo is similar to the way it is described in this article but much more detailed. It is not in line with the basis of Alexius´ Enlightened Non-Teachings though.

****) Alexius never writes about something he has not tried. So he knows that the way he presents the perception ´it is what it is´ works. In his case, though, he does not use it to feel good about duality but to feel so good that he does not fend off having glimpses of the enlightenment of that which is one and, therefore, can go to sleep bathed in light and wake up hearing ethereal harmonies.
